Mechanized Age

The mechanized age had taken over and replaced the age of monarchy.  Technology was at an intermediate level.  Life became more fast-paced with the birth of factories and other businesses that created jobs for the common man.  Every household had indoor plumbing, refrigeration for food storage, and better tools for every day tasks.  People drove automobiles, rode steam-powered locomotives and boats, and flew prop planes, or simply rode bicycles to satisfy their transportation needs.  Weapons were more complex and required a medium level of maintenance.  Weapons were more diverse in choosing.  Depending on the person or group, various blades, arrows, pistols and shotguns were used.  Some swords, daggers, and ammunition were made of silver, since most creatures of the night have a weakness toward it; otherwise they were made of steel.  Medicine was administered in the form of pills or injection by a syringe.  Medical treatment was rendered by the use of medicine, more complicated surgery involving anesthetics and equipment, or healing magic.

A major city was divided into three sectors:  The rich or high roller sector, the middle or workingman sector, and the poor or slum sector.  Various cities had different sized sections of each.  A growing industrialized city had a healthy population exceeding one hundred thousand people.  The downtown area of the city had a transportation network, including highways, regular city streets, and railroad tracks.

All major cities were an urban utopia with apartment complexes, factories, office towers, and other buildings developing in the uptown and downtown areas.  Paved roads connected everything together for commuters as well as those living in houses surrounding the city.  Since monarchy was obsolete, an elected governor ruled the city.  The city had three different types of defense against any threat to it.  One group was an elite set of bodyguards assigned to protect the governor at all times within the governor’s mansion and any public appearance.  Police officers kept the laws enforced and protected the citizens, while bounty hunters and other mercenaries dealt with the creatures of the night.  The third group was the city militia, consisting of soldiers, established to protect the city from forces threatening the interior and the outside boundaries from invaders.  At this time lawbreakers were brought before a judge to plead their case.  The judge settled disputes and passed judgment on the crime committed.  Lawyers or representatives were used in this type of trial, but were not always effective.  The fate of the lawbreaker was therefore firmly in the hands of the judge.
